KITE SURFING- AN EXCITING SPORT

Kite surfing

is a recreational sport that involves the use of power kite to pull the rider across water surface with the help of a kite board and other related equipment. There are many techniques which an experienced rider may perform like turning, controlled flying and jumping and board grabs. The experienced rider can also perform freestyle from his own creativity.

Kitesurfing

Kite sizes depend on wind strength and the rider’s capability, his style, board size and more importantly rider’s weight. Weather conditions have a major impact on kitesurfing. Cross shore and cross on shore winds are very suitable for kite surfing.  Any location with consistent and large water body is suitable for kite surfing.

Kitesurfing gear consists of certain equipments like power kite, flying lines, control bar, kite harness, kite board, wet suit, safety hook knife, helmet, personal floatation device (PFD), impact vest, board leash, signalling devices, buddy and GPS. All these equipments ought to be put before kite surfing

There are certain restricted areas where kitesurfing might prove dangerous and thus the rules and regulations ought to be followed before kite surfing to assure safety of riders. There are kite surfing rules for 2 or more rider’s sporting on same water body to assure enough clearance for their safety.

For beginners, it is advised to take help from an instructor as the sport has equal levels of excitement and danger. The best kite for beginners is kahoona. Kahoona is ultra stable in air, easy to fly and is most commonly used by all kite schools. The best kite board is a twin tip board such as best quija or balance team 133 kite board.

Wake boards are used for kite surfing. The length of these wakeboards must be up to rider’s shoulder height. Based on wind volume, board size is obtained. In light wind, kites are difficult to manage and thus a large board is required.

Kitesurfing

becomes an exciting sport provided  the rules and kite surfing equipments are taken care of.

Your Questions About Windsurfing Lessons

Donna asks…

Is it mandatory to wear a wetsuit (or dry suit) when taking windsurfing lessons in the summer?

Everyone seems to wear one. I look fat in one. I don’t want to wear one.

admin answers:

Depending on where you are, the water in some places is really cold and it is even colder when you get wet and the stand up again in the wind. Believe me, when you are on the water people don’t really care what you look like that much. It’s about dressing smartly not fashionably. It’s not really manadatory though, but stronly recommended especially when it’s cold.

Mark asks…

Your Questions About Kitesurfing

Mandy asks…

Kitesurfing trip to Spain Tarifa?

Wanting to go kitesurfing in Tarifa in August. Very hard to find accommodation for that month in Tarifa. Would it be ok to find a place in
a) Gibraltar
b) Malaga
c) Jerez
and just drive to Tarifa for kitesurfing?
I would appreciate some details on travel time and accomodations, thanks

answers:

August is always difficult.
The places you mention are far from Tarifa and I would not like to drive back there all stiff and tired after a heavy day’s surfing.
Try the Hotel Reina Christina in Algeciras. It often has rooms available in August. Haggle.
There are a number road-side hotels on the road to Chiclana / Cadiz which are not near the sea. E.g Tahivilla (ugh!) which is a collection of houses near a filling station in the middle of nowhere. But it has some rooms.

My tip would be go inland. Have a look at Google earth and guiacampsa.com

Richard asks…

Is it possible to get used to riding a kitesurf board opposite to my natural stance ?

I’m about to get into Kitesurfing; my background is surfing and powerkiting. As a surfer, I know my natural stance is orthodox, and have never tried to surf goofy foot. What I do know is that when I’ve tried to skateboard goofy, its really really difficult, near on impossible. I’m concerned that I will have the same problem kitesurfing when I have to ride goofy. Is this something that one just gets used to ? Thanks

answers:

I snowboard and I’ve found you are so much better at it when you learn to do it both sides
its definitly possible
its just gonna take time and a few falls and your gonna feel sort of unsafe but you just have to forget all that and get out of your comfort zone
best of luck

Mark asks…

Kitesurfing beginner?

What is a trainer kite? can i use it in actual kitesurfing or it is just for practice purposes only on the beach ?

answers:

Trainer kites are smaller ram air, or traction kites, used to get the basic feeling of turning a kite. They are less expensive than the actual larger kite you’ll be using in water. It’s cheaper to crash or damage a trainer kite than to learn with an inflatable which break very easy if they are pounded into the ground while learning. Also you can get a better idea for the sport before you spend a signifcant purchase buying you water gear. Don’t buy the cheapest trainer kite you can. It will break much quicker than a better one. There is a difference. That’s goes true when buying your water kites also. Slingshot make a very good trainer kite in a 2m and 3m. The 3m is a little more money but it’s more realistic as far a the pull and timing of the turning of the kite. It even has enough power you could use if on snow with snowboard for fun.

Once you own your trainer kite, you’ll always use it. You’ll never use it in the water, but you’ll show your friends how to do it(you don’t want to give them your big kite!!!) and you get get enough land practice, no matter how hood your are. Try these links

Steven asks…

Is howtokite.com a good place to learn how to ktiesurf? I’m new to kitesurfing but want to get started.?

answers:

You could do better but if they are close by to where you are at the time then you may not have another choice. G’Luck

Kiteboarding Lessons to needs to be learned

Kiteboarding

has turned out to be one of the most popular sporting events over the past decade. If you believe it or not kiteboarding is really much easier to learn and to fly them but on otherhand it also needs some more skill set to minimize the risk of getting injured. Kiteboarders can certainly learn to fly the kite within couple of training session and therefore by properly making use of the harness and power control one could really fly for several hours without getting much tired. Even though the kites are quite easier to handle and to steer them in the direction of the wind, there is always an incredible amount of power available and its during those first few hours of using a kite that you need an guidence to help you safely learn how to access that power without getting out of control.

Kiteboarding

Through proper coaches or guidance a newbie can easily learn about how to of setting up the kite and kick off with flying and moreover how to handle the kite safely while sliding through the phase of the wind and as well as when reaching the shore after finishing.  Most often after undergoing a few proper sessions of supervised practice, many new riders are certainly much capable at handling the kite at ease and to ride them safely. Kiteboarders can ride out and back to where they started, tack upwind or downwind like sailboats, and ride anything from kiteboards, surfboards, and wakeboards of all shapes on the water; to snowboards and skis on snowcovered flatlands, or hilly mountain terrain; to skateboards, offroad skateboards, and buggies across the ground. There is no limit to what or where you can ride behind a kite.

Eventhough it looks much easier to learn and to ride the kite one should also be much cautious over the safety measure as a slight lag in the concentration could lead to an adverse effect in kiteboarding. Moreover the kitesurfer should also learn the techniques of how to handle the kite in case of sudden winds or how to avoid serious mishaps. Prior knowledge about

kiteboarding

and how to are mandatory in case of kitesurfing.

Your Questions About Kiteboarding

Sandra asks…

Kiteboarding?

Im starting Kiteboarding and was wondering what i need to be able to do before taking lessons. I use to snowboard does that help in any way? What could help me? Do i use some specific muscle group or something that i can train for?

answers:

In many situations, taking a basic lesson requires absolutely no previous knowledge or skill. Everything you need to know will be covered if you are taking the lesson from a reputable instructor. If you’re looking to book lessons, try Real Kiteboarding at www.realkiteboarding.com. Your board experience from snowboarding will serve you well when you start to ride, so you need to focus on developing kite skills. By putting those two together, you’ll be able to pick up the sport quickly. As for training, I’d recommend working on your core muscles and legs, specifically your abs and quads.

answers:

Hi and welcome to kiteboarding!

WHAT IT IS:
Kiteboarding is also known as kitesurfing or “power kiting”. Power kites have lifted and pulled pilots recreationally for decades. Kiteboarding started off in the late ‘80s when some professional water skiers replaced their boats with wind power. Hawaii soon caught on and started using surfboards with kites in the early ‘90s.

It was only a few years later when the first official kiteboarding company appeared in 1998. And, in the mere years since, kiteboarding has become the world’s fastest growing water sport!

WHAT IT COSTS:
A full setup includes a harness, a kite, a kite bar and lines, a board, eventually a wetsuit and a helmet. Pilots use different kites for varying wind conditions. While used gear is available, you shouldn’t buy any before having received 4-5 days of instruction. Initial investments range from $800+, and then the wind is free!

HOW HARD IT IS:
From looking at it, you would never believe how EASY it is! It is easier than surfing, easier than skiing, easier than windsurfing. It is NOT physical (70% of the power is handled by the harness) so it is also perfect for kids. Women love this sport too!

When I learned Kitesurfing 7 years ago, it was really dangerous and we needed at least 5 DAYS to be able to stand on the board. Nowadays huge advances in kite and board technology have dramatically improved the learning curve, you could be riding after 5 HOURS (even if only for a few yards…).

WHAT’S YOUR NEXT STEP:
Get more info on forums such as http://www.kiteforum.com/ or online magazines such as: http://www.kiteboardingmag.com

…and…

GET SCHOOLED !!!
That is the key point in this post: “don’t try it at home”. Kiteboarding can be dangerous and you MUST learn with a certified instructor during the first week. Find a certified shool in your area, or in your next holliday destination at http://www.ikorg.com/iko-centers-water.php .

Here is what Kiteboardingmag has to say about taking lessons:

1 Demolish the Learning Curve. Sure you’re a wakeboarder/surfer/
snowboarder/ballerina, but that doesn’t mean you can fly a kite. A good instructor will help you use what you’ve learned from other sports, drastically reducing the learning curve.

2 Save Serious Coin. Lessons save time and money. Without the right-size kite, you will end up trashing your gear. Schools have many different sizes and styles of kites, so why not learn on and trash their gear instead?

3 Guidance. Instructors know about all the latest gear and will share tips that would have taken you months to discover. Plus, most have been on the scene since day one, so they can also introduce you to all the local kiters.

4 Protection. Not knowing what you’re doing flying a kite can put others in harm’s way and might even hurt you. Not to mention that injuring others is not a great way to impress the local kiters.

5 Stress-Free Shopping. A good instructor will know the perfect kite and board for your weight, size and style, saving you hours of frustration. And they might even be able to cut you a deal on your first purchase.

6. Plan for the Future. Once you complete a lesson and are up and riding, you’ll get all the info about where to kite, when the wind blows, where the good spots are and where to launch from.

7. It’s Fun. Lessons get you outside in the water for a great, active day without the worrying about not knowing what to do, plus you get to become part of a culture that’s a lot of fun to be around.

SUMMARY:
Kiteboarding isn’t just a sport… It’s a passion and a way of life… It can forever change your life for the better. It can be done in nearly any location in the world, with nothing but wind and gear that can easily be packed down to the size of a golfing bag. You’ll meet the most incredible people, travel to beautiful locations and enjoy the healthiest of lifestyles.

I hope this helped. Check my profile and send me an email if you want more tips on kiteboarding.

Aloha!

James asks…

How long does it take to learn kiteboarding?

How long does it take to learn kiteboarding?
I want to take some classes during my vacation this year. Would a normal person (I have some surfing experience) be able to ride decently after 4-5 days ? Thanks

answers:

It varies, I’d say you should be able to pick it up after 2-3 days(if you have surfed before). Visit www.waterplayusa.com to find the kitesurfing lessons near you. They also have many other water sports and activities throughout the nation…

Mark asks…

For kiteboarding can you use a wakeboard or do you need a kiteboard?

For kiteboarding can you use a wakeboard or do you need a kiteboard?

answers:

Beginner boards (long boards) are in the 150cm to 180 cm range. Advanced or short boards are in the 90 cm – 136 cm range. If you are just starting out, you probably want a longer board. Personally, I don’t see why you couldn’t, it might just take some getting used to its responsiveness if you are just starting out. I would advise taking lessons if you haven’t done it before and get an adequate setup to make your riding and progression more enjoyable.

John asks…

What is more fun surfing or kiteboarding?

i am not asking which one is more fun in certain conditions. If the surf was great, and there was a strong wind would you rather go surfing or kiteboarding?

answers:

Kitesurfing, hands down.

Several serious safety issues have been resolved in the past couple years with kite surfing kites, with the invention of bow kites. Now, riders can fully de-power an out of control kite.

Both sports are dangerous, and can put you in situations where you are out of control. Be careful, and seek qualified instruction, beware of risks, and listen to that voice inside your head.

All in all you in most places, you can kite many, many more days than regular surfing.

Insane! Kiteboarders jump over Worthing pier

Two kite surfers from West Sussex took advantage of strong winds on the south coast to realise an ambition to jump over Worthing pier. Jake Scrace, 25, and Lewis Crathern, 24, had been planning Monday morning’s jump for three years but had to wait for perfect weather conditions. They took off from Goring to the west of Worthing in gusts of wind that were more than 40mph.
